Windows
Windows provide a number of essential features in any structure.
They provide natural light, which reduces need for electrical
light, they admit solar energy, which reduces the need for heating,
and they alow for ventilation. However, a window can create a
significant amount of energy loss through air leakage and heat
loss or heat gain.
The
Environmental Building News publication GreenSpec recommends a
number of measures: Control heat loss and heat gain by using multiple
panes, gas fills, glazing products. They also recommend reducing
the impacts of window assemblies by choosing products with high
durability and high recycled material content .
The
guide to Resource Efficient Building Elements states that Current
technology combines insulative frames, multiple glazings, gas
filling, thermal break spacers and window coating to dramatically
improve the thermal performance of windows. (Page 55.)
