Steel
is increasingly being used for residential structures. Steel framing
can be used as wall, floor, and roof structural members. Due to
rising wood prices, declining quality of wood, and increasing
recycled metal content, steel is becoming more cost-effective
and environmental.
Steel
has a number of advantages over wood. Various sources agree that
steel framing is highly durable, impervious to insect attack,
its non-flammable, will not rot, and is recyclable. While recycled
content in steel is on the rise (up to 95% recycled content, including
75% post-consumer), the production of steel has a high-embodied
energy and is resource consumptive, thereby contributing to air,
water, and oil pollution. The drawbacks to steel can be reduced
by using salvaged steel, steel with high-recycled-content, and
steel that is nearby (to reduce transportation costs).
