The
Cleveland Directory of Green Building Resources
Green Building Professionals
One
of the first steps toward integrating green design into your home
or office, whether you are retrofitting, or constructing a new
building, is identifying a team or design professional to work
with.
The
following is a list of Cleveland area professionals that consider
themselves green or who have begun to educate themselves on the
latest innovations in the field.
Many
of these professionals are interested in green design but dont
have much experience, while others have completed projects that
are in part or in whole considered green. At this
time, there are no federal or state guidelines for most professions
outlining what is green. Thus, in the directory, professionals
have self-select themselves based on experience, education and
comfort in the field.

I
do mostly residential architecture. I feel that the ideas involved
in "green" design are essential to the long-term survival of
our planet. Think global, act local. I try to do what I can
by steering my clients into using materials which are "green",
although I find myself learning more about these materials and
concepts every day I practice.

The
ecological design innovation center (EDIC) is a project of
the Oberlin College Environmental Studies Program. It integrates
several ecological design strategies into the sustainable
management of a 70acre property. EDIC combines sustainable
agriculture, habitat restoration projects, renewable energy
demonstrations, buildings and facilities that incorporate
natural building techniques, education programs, and innovative
land-use planning approaches that utilize gis. Currently,
we are in the preliminary planning phases for the project
and would like to invite anybody who is interested to contact
us about potential involvement in on-site programs and demonstrations
in ecological design.

Strawbale
Natural
Homesteads
13182
N. Boone Rd.
Columbia Station, OH 44028
Mark
Hoberecht, founder of Natural Homesteads, has advanced degrees
in Engineering and Sustainable Systems, as well as a professional
certification in Bau-Biologie ("building biology"). This evolving
science deals with the interaction between buildings and their
occupants. One of its most fundamental principles is the use
of a breathable building shell that acts as a third skin (clothing
is our second skin). Unlike new synthetic materials, natural
building materials are inherently breathable. They also exhibit
other health-promoting properties, and have a number of ecological
benefits. These characteristics form the basis of a unique
hybrid building system developed by Natural Homesteads. It
combines the most appropriate attributes of newer construction
methods, such as straw-bale, with traditional European techniques,
such as cob and straw/clay. The resulting building are energy
efficient, environmentally responsible, extremely durable,
healthy, and beautiful. Mark offers design and consultation
services for architects and contractors, as well as owners/builders.
He also teaches workshops. Call or e-mail for an appointment
or workshop schedule.
