Between 20% and 40% of material clogging up America’s landfills is from the construction industry. The green building industry can help reduce this waste significantly, while making new products from waste products. In order to minimize construction and demolition waste in North East Ohio, the Cleveland Green Building Coalition is a part of several initiatives, including a study of four construction sites with the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District, a deconstruction initiative. We managed to minimize our own waste in the construction of the Cleveland Environmental Center by over 85%.
